Dear District Superintendent Burgos,  

We thank you for your leadership during this challenging time for our church and UMC as a whole. We appreciate your prayers and grace as we embark on discernment regarding our relationship with the Greater New Jersey Annual Conference of the United Methodist Church.  

After countless hours of prayers and self reflection, our church has decided to enter discernment for disaffiliation based on the reasons set forth in paragraph 2553 of the Book of Discipline. The Church Council of the First Korean United Methodist Church of Cherry Hill held a meeting attended by 36 members on July 18, 2022 and voted unanimously to explore and discern disaffiliation.

We’ve been holding prayer meetings and Q&A sessions. Considering general sentiment of our congregation and straw poll results, we are confident that we should be able to complete this process by December 2022.  

Please understand that we have taken these steps with a heavy heart. UMC has been with our church since its foundation almost half a century ago. We will always be grateful for our time together. But we regret that we have reached a point where disaffiliation might be mutually beneficial for both our congregation and GNJ Annual Conference. We wish you, your staff, and the Greater New Jersey Conference of the United Methodist Church abundant blessings in your future endeavors.

수많은 시간의 기도와 자기 성찰 끝에 우리 교회는 장정 2553 항에 명시된 사유에 따라 교단 변경에 들어가기로 결정했습니다. 체리힐 제일교회 임원회는 2022 년 7 월 18 일 36 명의 회원이 참석한 회의를 열고 만장일치로 결의안을 의결했습니다.

우리는 많은 기도모임과 질의응답 시간을 가졌습니다. 우리 교인들의 일반적인 정서와 예비 투표 결과를 고려할 때, 우리는 이 과정을 2022 년 12 월까지 완료할 수 있을 것이라고 확신합니다.

무거운 마음으로 이러한 조치를 취한 것을 이해해 주십시오. 거의 반세기 전에 창립된 이후로 우리 교회는 UMC 와 함께 해왔습니다. 우리는 함께한 시간에 항상 감사할 것입니다. 그러나 우리는 교단 변경이 우리 교회와 대 뉴저지연회 모두에 상호 이익이 될 수 있는 지점에 도달한 것을 유감스럽게 생각합니다. 우리는 당신의 앞날에 당신과 당신의 직원, 그리고 UMC 뉴저지연회에 많은 축복이 있기를 바랍니다.

Grace and peace from Christ be with you.

I am in receipt of your notice and will advise the team working with congregations so they can reach out to you to begin the formal disaffiliation discernment process approved by the GNJ Annual Conference in May.

I will hold the congregation in prayer as you journey through the discernment process asking God that further clarity emerges about what the next faithful steps are for the congregation. While my hope is that we can find a path forward that allows us to remain united in our mission to make disciples of Jesus Christ for the transformation of the world acknowledging our diversity and differences, I am committed to honoring whatever final decision the congregation makes about the future.
